Happy Weekend
I haven't watch any airing drama this week, I still watch Marriage Contract cause it count as last week.
I suppose the blame is on the other show I've been watching,
Fated to Love You (T-ver) : I watched the K-version so the comparison is inevitable. This show is really funny!! It make me laugh like when I watched Go Princess Go and it did make me choke up (*multiple times). I loved the symbolism (the train, the plane, the jet), this show is hilarious. The plot also really good, it's a redemption story when someone get a second chance to make different choice because of FATE. It hard to not see how fate make them together, what are the odd to meet again and again without their consent, they are really fated to meet and fall in love again and again. The 2nd Lead is really nice and hard to resist but I guess the drama pretty much establish on how Xin Yi choose something for herself. It has some draggy element near the end but I like that this drama go all the way to portray the selfishness of everyone, they are all flawed character you may hate and love but I feel like it worth it. The best character of all is definitely the Grandma (drop the mic).
In comparison with K-ver, I think the T-ver is much more solid show, it has the bad moment and the unlikable choice but it's funnier , it's more coherent, realistic and they make a choice even when they got accident or the timing got off. The K-version somehow feel like tragedy when this T-ver feel like it's a sad life because they was a stupid person.

Moon River (T-drama) : This feel like The Heirs+Boy before Flower (Kdrama reference but better) or just Hana Yori Dango manga version (Jdrama reference) or Just as a good youth drama as itself (ias my category). It's really funny and cute. I just watch up to ep 10 and I choked up in laughed and cuteness. It has many similar shot with the heirs and BOF or Hanadan but hilariously well executed. The heroine is badass (in real meaning since she win all physical fight in the drama, she is superwoman) and always saw the male lead as someone weaker than her so she can't fight him. The male lead is charming, he is not an ass but not nice either, it just everybody afraid of him because of his family. His flaw is his bossy attitude but it wasn't something aggravating. I like the sidekick funny character, the always thirsty thinking roomate, the weak willed hometown friend (who I dislike at 1st), the overly cute Lucy who is in the mean girl club but has real sense of akcnowlegment. It has very familar chaebol overpower plot but the obsessive girl antagonist is actually the richest one and his bad dad. This maybe gonna do to the draggy route in later episode but I find it's really satisfying show when I laugh and giggle cause they said the right thing. I think the 2nd lead is hard to root because he always the one that want to make the OTP together but still kinda pursuing her and she didn't know about it (I mean...

Marriage Contract : I loved this show so much that I watched it in real time. It's a melodrama done well and maybe it's been a long time since I had a well executed melodrama. Every thing is predictable but I want to see it, I want to be in their world, laugh and cry together. Every moment feel precious and I cry a lot, ep when Ji Hoon said he is sorry for every thing and when he found her bag. I hope this drama ends well cause even a fly can see they can make a beautiful family together.

I thought I am too old for Kpop but this week, I caught off guard by Open Your Eyes (NCT) and Letting Go (Day 6) .
Still wish Music Commander wins this ep on King of Masked Singer
bye to 태양의 후예 / DoTS : I still want a goat, or maybe Asparagus

I agree with you, that's why I think they need to make maximum win rule since Idk how to invite somebody to win over the Music Commander.

He is really really good and I don't mind to hear him every week, but I feel the show need to go on too, if the veteran can't come maybe song seung yoon can come . . .

Yaa Day6! They are so fun. So I was in the middle of Moon River too this week and half the episodes' subs just suddenly disappeared, this was on Viki and I've never had that happen before. So weird and annoying. They are still missing as of today! Is it just me?

It still missing, I watched the missing subtitle episode in KissAsian, they had it all.
I miss the comment section since it's really funny , esp to see people wishes while watching the scene and ofc "the burning toe sock" comments

I never thought I'll eager to care about kpop group anymore and somehow I find myself liking Day6 more than I supposed to be. I like their voice

*I've been trying to reply your comment several time but none appear, idk why

So, viki still has missing subs, I watched the episode in K-I-S-S-A-S-I-A-N (remove the -), they had it all with hardsub

I love the vocal in DAY6, it refreshing and I like almost their song, I just play their album on youtube.

@jen as for Korean Band, I like FT Island, NELL, Royal Pirates, standing Egg and Lunafly, then add DAY6 as the new one ^^

Thanks Cheezy, I'll look for it there! Also just checked out some of your music recs and really loving them, NELL especially, ty!

@jen definitely looks like Sancheezy knows more about the band/indie side of k music than I do - I'm still stuck mostly on kpop- in all its cotton-candy-insanity glory. #sendhelp

Finally, about FTLY, someone to agree with me. When the Korean version came out everyone almost unanimously declared it to be much better than the original, which had me scratching my head. It took a few episodes and a few tries but in the end the Taiwanese version sucked me in completely whereas the Korean one left me completely detached.

Really? I was't so much into the Kversion when it aired, I watched it after it ends.
I think the Taiwanese is portrayed harsher but I think it better than the Korean version, the story makes sense and I get everyone side. On certain extend the Korean version in funny and had it's own charm but I can't lie that the original is better.
It even has better comedic moment, their 1st time, the female lead family, the anson blitz lighting communication . . . . (btw I feel like every thing in the drama will way more simple if no one listen to anson).
^^

Same here! I actually hungered for the Taiwanese Fated to Love You episodes each week (once a week! I watched it live!) but with the Korean Fated to Love You, I had this teenage-so-not-impressed face the whole time. I think I just really don't fit OTT slapsticks.

Like, I though that T-FTLY was funny and stupid but K-FTLY was just stupid...

I loved Moon River too! It deliberately took every tired drama trope and mixed it up with lots of comedy. I even like the OST.

Moon River kind of got tedious near the end (with constant insertions of random pretty characters who I guess are some sort of twpop idols, plus all the noble idiocy), but I really loved how it got all the annoying trope-ish parts of HYD and turned it around.

Hellluuuu

I am off to Budapest tomorrow! Well, Poland first, then Hungary. Packing now, chaos everywhere.
I´ll. Be. Back. (in a bit more than a week)

Havent watched that many dramas, except Vampire Detective, but it keeps stopping for me on Dramacool.to and won´t play well.
Instead I have been reading fairy tales and about their origins and I really like the dark interpretations of them in movies. They tend to be very similar though, the different "horror" adaptations. I think if the original tales from the brothers Grimm would be adapted to kdrama, there would be a lot of taboo subjects (decapitating your own child to save a friend etc) but some plots would really work well. After all, we already have Jackpot...
I understand the plight some have with Jackpot, and its unbelievable plots or lack of any, but I just enjoy watching Geunsukkie doing something so different from his usual image. It is a crack on its own I guess. Like watching Survivor on reality TV or something. Maybe it is a cross-over of reality and drama... or a very long audition for X-Men movie.

Question: is there any Borthers Grimm fairytale that you think would make a good drama?

I remember there's a story called The True Bride which pretty much can be molded into Kdrama.
About a beautiful girl that work for his stepmother. Then an Old Woman always came to help her when the task is unbelievably hard. Then the stepmother asked her to build a castle, the old woman build it for her and let her sleep. The next day the step mom come to check but die of accident there. She lives alone in wealth and the castle. She becomes famous and a prince pursue her. They fall in love and promise to meet. The Prince somehow miss the appointment and they separated. She tried to find him and then years later, there's news about the prince marriage. She came and make him remember about their love with many things.

Change old woman to second lead and make amnesia story, this become kdrama 101. She become powerful business woman that meet long last chaebol love.
I am sorry if this wasn't the right story/new plot but I remember this story as Kdrama brother Grimms cause it feels so familiar

Hmm, maybe The Twelve Huntsmen? I've been thinking about the Hwasadan from Six Flying Dragons a lot lately. I would love a drama centered around a similar organization, and The Twelve Huntsmen would work as a basic premise: A woman joins an organization of "Hunts(wo)men" to hide herself from the powerful man she was once engaged to. Make it a revenge drama with a lesbian love-line, and I would be so into it.

Someone make this drama I just made up.

I think it sounds excellent. I would make it a spy drama with then infiltrating every cabinet in the presidents´office and affect every decision to the favor of their leader. Like a modern version of the Nameless from Dragons. Or 12 "girl-Healers"

Hi all:

I will only say that I'm super-glad that it's finale week for so many dramas. Coz, this season left me cold for the most part. Now that Ahjusshi, DOTS, Merchant Gaekju are all over -- whether they were good or not-- I can start anew. There's something so wonderful about anticipating new goodies.

Other than that:

Dramas: Nam Jung Gi -- I can't believe I'm actually accepting the amping up toward a possible love affair. I'm actually feeling this love story is organic and believable and perfect for each other. So weird because at first I really hated the idea of a romance being wedged into this story. Am wondering who Bong Gi will end up with.

Marriage Contract: Please give our lovers a happy ending.

Daebak: A good show, not perfect (because of all the coincidences) but good enough until a better sajeuk comes along.

Neighborhood lawyer: good

Mrs Cop: okay

Have a great weekend, all.

I've actually been curious about Neighborhood Lawyer. I keep on hearing positive things here and there. I also read somewhere that it's adding more viewers every week and keeping them, so I'm guessing it's doing something right.

Have a great weekend also!

It's good! The cases are hit and miss and the one case right now is a bit overused so I'm waiting for it to blossom into full-on revenge. (I just get very tired of seeing the same old plot of rich chaebol/entrepreneur kicking poor shop outdoors in order to build a shopping complex.) Heck, I'm kinda tired of greedy rich chaebols.

But other than that, the character of Lawyer Jo is so much fun and his entourage are fun as well. Not liking the ex-wife or the vengeful chaebol dad who owns the prosecution office. So, yeah, i like it. There are moments of genius and originality, and then there are moments of same-old kdrama plot

It's solid. The starter episodes to get everything in place were a little ham-fisted but the show seems to be hitting its stride now. The supporting cast is really excellent. You have the actress who played Editor Kim ("Mama mia!") from she was pretty as his investigator sidekick and boxer ahjussi from Last as a kooky loan shark who splits his office with the law firm and he and his boys act as their muscle when there's a pinch. Kang So-Ra delivers a pitch-perfect performance as a total naive flake newbie lawyer.

My favorite is Neighborhood Lawyer...I nearly fell off my couch laughing during ep. 5. The entire cast is so fun! Hope it keeps the pace throughout the 20 eps. Also enjoying Marriage Contract. These 2 dramas are the ones I wait for every week.

Otherwise, Daebak is coming along...after the extreme violence of SFD, I was a bit hesitant to watch a sageuk right away. Vampire Detective...I feel like I am treading water and not sure why they even made our hero into a vampire.

Watching DOTS on Dramafever so I'm only half way there but it is finally picking up and getting a little focus. Enjoying the romance of the 2nd leads more.

After more than a month, still waiting for Viki to finish Engish subs of The Merchant.

Could we get a drama hangout for Five Children?

So cute! I'm excited for 50 episodes. I'm only afraid that they'll make the mistake they made with “What happens with this family?” by turning the first loveline (the more mature couple) into something way too cutesy once they admit their feelings to each other. It's their maturity that makes that loveline shine; they don't have redo a young love, they can have something that includes the wisdom they've accrued over a lifetime. Even if they haven't dated in a while, still, they have something different to bring to a relationship—more depth and understanding of what humans are like. I wish they'd keep that depth instead of childizing/trivializing it and turning the attention to the younger couples with the older couple kept on in the background like elevator music.

I'm also loving Marriage Contract. It does hit all the right notes and drew tears. Sigh. I hope it has a happy ending!

I haven't watched the finale for Descendants of the Sun yet. It doesn't have the same sort of cliff hangers that other shows have from week to week, so I feel like I can wait to watch; and I suppose I feel like the format is too predictable. Each two-episode unit has someone's life in danger, and then rescued, with pretty kisses thrown in somewhere.

I recently watched a Jdrama--Kazoku no Katachi (the shape of a family?) that I really enjoyed. It's about a single man who finally buys his own apartment, which is his castle and sanctuary from the world, but then his dad shows up with his new stepson because his new wife has gone missing, and the the man's precious solitude is gone. But little by little he begrudgingly lets people into his heart. It was a really satisfying drama with compassion and real life wisdom, minus the liter of tears other Jdramas sometimes come with...

Me too!

The leading lady such a hurt person but still so positive and hilariously straightforward and takes no bullshit. She is ♡!

The next best thing about the show for me is the 'golfer couple'. She doesn't take any of his harmless nonsense and he doesn't stand for her low self-esteem crap. I can totally see them together as a couple, getting married and living life while bickering and making up and being sweet and then complaining some more, haha!

SangTae's dad is precious and Mom can expect quite a bit but she's lovable too. SangTae was being a jerk but he just shot into my adorbs list with thst mistake at the ending of the latest episode, ha!

The rest... I don't care for much. I might have a negative visceral reaction whenever the family of cheating losers come up though.

Me too me too.. Five enough is really nice..

and well the golfer sways my heart...
1. Leads - good casting
2. Golfer - i hope there is enough noise to increase his on air time :P .. painful to have 2-3 consecutive eps with blink and miss scenes of his

3. Second brother and love story - yawn

4. Sister/teacher - hmm.. character the typical k drama heroine..and well i don't find her charismatic enough in the role.. but love the golfer guy so..well watever bear it..

5. Golfer's bro - probably the only sane character after our male lead

6. JJ .. dead wife's sister - she is cute..immature and naive..but as a character quite childlike..and cute.. I just find male lead's sisters behavior quite irritating and selfish and full of jealousy towards JJ

7. The in laws - he he he he.. all the spice is here.. :)

8. kids are sweet- no role to play till now...but i guess they will become important once the main OTP love story stabilizes..

My only problem with Yeon-Tae is that she complains too much when it was her choice not to confess. So she chose to protect her friendship over her first love, then she has to live with it. Otherwise, I love her character, especially with Sung Hoon. I kind of have liked the actress in everything I've seen her in.

Jin-joo is annoying as hell. Her relationship with Sae-min is built on her pretentiousness, so I don't know how the hell they're gonna fix that. Maybe they'll do what Jo Bo-Ah's character and her partner did in All About My Mom.

I just can't warm up to Shim Hyung-Tak's loveline. They both still haven't found what to do with their life yet.

Starting with the shows I've decided to drop...

Monster - I can only describe it as nonsensical. The first 2 episodes were pretty good actually. They had a good setup for a revenge story, and Lee Gi-kwang did well in his role. The plot after that, however, is ridiculous. They've spent the last 4 episodes on a "training camp" thing, which is part of the recruitment process for this huge company our protagonist is supposed to infiltrate. And to become the shadow agent, you need to excel at studying, exercising, fighting, cooking, crime-solving (and more to come). Also, the tone of the drama seemed to have taken a complete turn from episode 2 to episode 3, changing from a melo to a comedy. It also appears to me that these episodes are really just fillers. And they probably need to add a few more (superfluous) categories to their judging criteria to make up to 50 episodes.

Jackpot - Jang Geun-seok looks pretty good in hanbok, but surprisingly Yeo Jin-goo doesn't look as good as I expected him to (apologies to his noona fans). I was just watching for the sake of watching really. Personally, I think that the drama is boring. I don't see a direction the story is going. And this probably means that I won't be watching any of the Mon-Tue dramas from now on.

Refresh Man - This is about as typical as a Taiwanese drama can get, meaning it's super cringe-worthy and not worth your time.

The show I'm currently watching...

Ms. Temper & Nam Jung-gi - When I start watching a drama's live broadcast, it means that I really like the drama. I love Ms. Temper & Nam Jung-gi. Mainly Ms. Temper, but I'm willing to share the love. The drama takes on real life workplaces issues such as sexual discrimination, sexual harassment, working mothers, superior-subordinate relationships, etc. Of course, unlike reality, everything gets resolved in the drama. Well, people probably don't want a depressing take on these issues anyway. I want to say that it's the best drama I've watched this year but I've pretty much dropped every single drama I've started watching. So I guess it'll just have to settle for "the first drama I will finish watching this year" then.

I agree totally with you on Monster. I must say that I prefer the first two eps. Lee Gi Kwang and the young girl did well. Somehow they seem natural. Jackpot is based on a 1728 historical event. It was a 17 days (if I remember correctly) revolt against King Yeongjo.

I'm nervous when it comes to the writer but there is a lot of things that like about it. The story is pretty solid so far. It's beautifully shot. I like the music and costumes. I like the directing. I'm not fond of the leading girl (not interested enough to look up her name), Yoon Jin Seo (Lady Choi) is ok and the rest of the leads are doing a fantastic job especially the veterans Choi Min Soo and Jeon Kwang Leol. Much love to Jang Geun Suk who is so earnest in his role.

Monster definitely has the feeling of filler. The viki subbing team has not been as eager the latest few episodes but DramaFever picked it up on a week delay.

Hello! Any Lee Je-hoon lovers here? I finished watching Signal this week and it was sooooo good. And I fell in lover with Lee Je-hoon, even though people complaint about his acting. Maybe I'm just somehow who loves more dramatic acting? Because I honestly loved the anguish and desperation he was able to bring out through his acting.

I watched the highly raved Bleak Night and I'm just really impressed with Lee Je-hoon. I don't usually like dramas or films that romanticise bullies, but somehow my heart aches for Ki-tae. I love how Ki-tae/Lee Je-hoon alternates between a menacing bully and a remorseful, lonely boy so easily, that makes it hard for you not to feel pity for Ki-tae. There's this look in his eyes that really haunts you. I'm not sure if it's just me, but I felt that his bullying was driven by his love for Baek-hee, in a romantic way. I felt that the act of him giving Baek-hee his most treasured possession, the baseball, was symbolic. The cruel bullying almost seemed like a desperate cry to get Baek-hee to notice him. Sort of reminds me of the way immature teenage boys bully girls they like to gain their attention. It's misguided, and Ki-tae was exceptionally cruel, but it was driven by his desperation, and also partly due to the fact that no one was there to teach him about loving someone.

I also watched Just Friends? and I enjoyed it a lot. It was a really easy watch. I find the gay couple really sweet. Lee Je-hoon really surprises me with his versatility - he was so convincing portraying a young gay man. And I'm glad I watched it because I finally get to see a happy, smiling Lee Je-hoon instead the varying degrees of misery he was in for the 16 episodes of Signal.

I was wondering what other Lee Je-hoon films or dramas should I watch next? I'm so tempted to watch Fashion King, because it has both Lee Je-hoon and Yoo Ah-in, and I cannot imagine something that could be bad with both of them in it...

Fashion King is Bad with a capital B, seriously don't even bother. It's one of the lowest rated dramas on both dramafever and Viki.

If you wanna see him in something different like a cute rom com, try Architecture 101.

Yeah, I thought she was ok in it actually (the role doesn't demand much from her and luckily the film doesn't rest on her shoulders). It's a solid watch!

Secret Door didn't seem that good either, based on the reviews. I must admit I cheated a little by watching some snippets of it, and I wasn't impressed by the rice chest scene at all. I know I shouldn't be comparing a film to a TV drama, but The Throne was so much better. Prince Sado getting into the rice chest should have been the greatest climax of the entire drama, but Secret Door handled it in such a anticlimactic manner I was like, "Oh, that's just it?"

I LOVE Lee Je Hoon too! I've only been replaying Signal over and over again these days because nothing else caught my attention. As a fan, I'm glad that he got to make a mark in the acting world with a performance of that caliber in Bleak Night. It was perfection, and still one of the most memorable performances by an actor for me.

As with movie recommendations, I agree with the poster above, watch The Front Line (where he played a soldier), My Paparotti (as a high school gangster with a gift for singing), and Architecture 101 (where he portrayed the innocence of first love - Suzy was bad but Nabdeuki, the wonderful Jo Jung Seok, more than made up for it). I can't remember much of Ghost Sweepers (I think I watched it on a plane years ago), and couldn't find Ethics of Anger anywhere. But again, he showed his versatility with every character that he played. I'm looking forward to Detective Hong Gil Dong about to be released in May this year. Gosh I just love him!

Fun tidbits, in My Paparotti he also shared a cute loveline with Kang So Ra, which made me giggle when I watched one of Signal's episodes where he was going to rip off Kang So Ra's picture from his whiteboard and then decided not to with a head shake and a fond smile. (I was like, you remembered her! It was so meta, hahaha)

I personally skipped Fashion King and Secret Door. No matter how much I love an actor, I still can't stand bad writing.

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll be sure to check them out! Aww, finally get I why he did that for Kang Sora in Signal! So cute, heh heh.

But it's pretty frustrating that he mostly does film, because in Singapore Korean films are hardly screened in cinemas, and it's pretty hard to watch it online or even find more news about it. TV drama on the other hand, receives so much more attention. Is he popular in Korea? I just wish he would do more good quality dramas and gain more international recognition!

I love Lee Je Hoon best in The Front Line and Bleak Night. Tried watching Ghost Sweepers for him and Kim Soo Ro, but got bored, I decided to drop it. He was cute in My Paparotti and Architecture 101, as well. I've yet to watch An Ethics Lesson, 'cause I can't find a copy with subs. Hoping to find one soon because it has him and Cho Jin Woong (just like The Front Line, My Paparotti and Signal). I've not watched any of his dramas but Signal. I'll look for Just Friends?, cause you said you enjoyed it.

Yoo Shi Yoon the 6th 1n2d member? This is fabulous news. In fact, it's the happiest kdrama news this week. he got his feet wet in the k-variety world with Barefoot Friends so I think he'll fit in and will certainly be the politest member! Oh, I am SO excited - I can picture him and Joonyoung (who are the closest in age) bringing more flower boy factor to the show (thank you). Yes! Good news, you made my day, Purple!

Oh yay! And yes, more flower boy factor never hurts lol. Not that 1n2d needs it, it's so much fun that it doesn't really matter what it's members look like.
I'm really excited to see him and Joon Young interact too, since all the others are a good deal older than JJY, so it'll be fun to see what their dynamic will be like (except Defconn, I think, he's not *that* much older is he? Start 30s? He doesn't act very young though).
In general, it'll just be exciting to see whether he'll fit well with the others. The show relies so much on cast chemistry.

@Purple - where did you read the news? I haven't been able to find anything on it even though I've been searching practically every day the past week or so lol.

Ugh! Sorry you aren't feeling well right now Kay. Don't sweat the tooth extraction - it isn't too bad. There can be a lot of tugging/pulling and strange sounds (they basically break your tooth and pull out the pieces I think) but it isn't painful as it is happening. My hubby had a similar scenario as yours and he was fine (and this is the man who stayed in bed for two days after having a mole removed from his leg, so not very brave when it comes to medical procedures!!) Hang in there and watch some shows or read or post more here to help get your mind off of it, if you are still anxious! ?

While it's certainly understandable to feel apprehensive before a dental procedure, don't be terrified. I don't know if this is an option at this point, but perhaps you can get a second opinion. ....... I hope you feel better soon!

Kay, I had the same thing happen to me after my first root canal. It never has been that great ever since and I should get it extracted. So if it comes to that, I say do it and get it over with.

I was terrified when my dentist said another tooth needed a root canal. But this time, no infection, so although it was uncomfortable for a few days, I could understand why people say the procedure isn't really that bad. That tooth gives me no problems and the cap is beautiful (I went for the all porcelain on that one).

Thank you all for your kind words! I'm going in on Monday to see what the deal is with this molar. Unfortunately, this is my second treatment on the same tooth - so I guess it's bound to be unhappy but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed I don't have to get rid of it. I'm not feeling the implant route but sounds like thats the best option vs a bridge (which, I don't think I can even think about right now!)

Movie makers hardly stay true to the origin. They've change race and gender before. More than half of the moviegoers aren't comic geeks. I suspect that most of the female viewers are going to watch it for Cumberbatch.

I think Michelle Yeoh, Chow Yun Fat, Ken Watanabe etc would have been great but people will always find something to complain about.
If Ken didn't play the fake Ra's al Ghul in Batman Begins I think they would've cast him.

For me, Ha Jung Woo (Kundo) looks like the comic version of the Ancient One. If only ....

Anyway, I'm excited. I'm going to watch it on my birthday.

"but people will always find something to complain about."

oh...you didn't...just go there?

I like and respect you, Kiara, and I always enjoy your comments, so that's the basis of my reply to you, which I hope you'll take in the sincere and friendly spirit it's meant :)

This isn't merely racebending. It's whitewashing, and whitewashing is just another expression of racism. Hollywood has been doing it forever.

I get it that it's something a lot of people have the luxury not to think about, but racism is a perpetual, everyday reality for minorities both on smaller and larger scales. Whitewashing is an erasure of minorities, their existences and their identities - they not only don't get representation, they get misrepresentation. They are fine as props to serve a white-centric narrative, but they don't merit narratives of their own. To sweep a history of oppression and erasure under the rug as 'always finding something to complain about' is deeply troubling.

I'm not saying people can't enjoy the film. Sure you should (and happy birthday!). But at the same time, I think we need to acknowledge that this is problematic, and most likely will keep on happening, because very few people give a damn. (Look at the case of Scarlett Johanssen in Ghost In The Shell.)

To quote somebody else:
"You know the worst part of this racist crap? The fact that Hollywood once again believes that there are NO Asians who can play an Asian character so clearly they HAVE to cast the white lady and make her bald in an attempt to mask the fact that they still whitewashed the fuck out of this character."

0
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

It isn't really whitewashing when a character isn't known for their race. The Ancient One isn't meant to portray someone of a certain race.

And you can't especially accuse Marvel of it when they've turned Nick Fury, Heimdall and James Rhodes black and no one whipped up a storm (well, some people did, but I think they're just as ridiculous as those people who whine about The Ancient One turning into a white female).

And on the Ancient One's case, they're doing something they've been doing consistently: Avoiding a stereotype. Some people will complain that the sage old Asian magician mentor is one. They avoided the stereotype with The Mandarin in Iron Man 3, and they did it too with the Ancient One in Doctor Strange.

0

Wow, you are totally misunderstanding me. What I meant by people will always find something to complain about is even if an Asian actor is cast for the role some will still complain about the actor not being right for the role, Ancient One was not Japanese if Watanabe were to play him etc etc etc.
I suggested actors that would be great for the role and all are Asians.

Hollywood is not going to define race for me. I define that myself by treating others with respect. We all belong to the human race, aren't we?

Hi Everyone! ....... I hope you are all doing well today.

Mrs. Cop 2 - Caught only one ep this week, but I don't even remember which one it was.

Mr. Selfridge - What devastating news for Mr. Grove.

Luther - Watched another intense ep, although, which one isn't. I swear, I don't think I can say anything about this without giving anything away.

Sometimes, when I do watch the parts I do watch, it's like there's the drama with the ajumma and her team then there's the drama with the Kim Bum character. It feels like two separate dramas in the same drama, if that makes any sense----but both flat of course. Kim Bum's drama being a little less so, but still "just there."

thriller genre and mystery sometimes tiresome and it feels like they'll win at the end if it's a very tragic story because of humanity.
Especially with high moral protagonist, sometimes they story already feels over with some episode.

This is my opinion as someone that doesn't into thriller and mystery because it's too much for being a drama, I prefer movie if they have 1 big plot, or series like detective ala Elementary, keep it as mystery series,
the thriller drama I enjoy is something like Kuroukouchi when you can't think the ending will good or not for the lead.
Thriller for 10+ episode is quite long.

Hello Beanie friends.
Well, it is official.
My life is a Korean makjang.
See if you don't agree. . .
Episode ONE: A couple of years ago I drew a cartoon based on the cliches I noticed in many Korean Dramas.
It was just for fun and for my own enjoyment.
I noticed that the website, DramaFever had a Friday Fan Art page in their news, so I entered it, not thinking that they'd print it—because most all of the fan art was, well, art. And my cartoons was doodles.
But to my shock and surprise, not only did they want to publish my cartoon, “Every Korean Drama in 10 Panels,” they also featured it, by itself and not along with the Friday Fan Art page.

Episode TWO: After it published, I wrote a thank you note to the woman who had contacted me and offered to do toons for them, if they wanted me to.
Again, to my shock and surprise, they offered me a free lance position as DramaFever cartoonist, with a contract and money for my drawings, along with a bonus system.

And so, I became a DramaFever toonist.

Episode THREE: Hardworking ajumma finds good fortune. Then tragedy strikes. My cancer came back, and I had to take a cartooning leave of absence. My husband didn't leave me, nor did my children get amnesia. But other than that, I'm still on track to be in a makjang.

Episode FOUR: In April, after recovering from 2 months of chemo (and the chemo not working, but that's another drama) I started drawing toons again. My second one (after the break) was published April 8. “My Alternate Ending for “Cheese in the Trap,” was viewed and shared by over 11 thousand people.

I was so happy! I got quite a few comments and wrote that I was planning on doing one cartoon each Friday. I even started working on my next one. (An Alternative Ending to Yong Pal—I thought the nurse shouldn't have died in the phone booth crash. She was such a unique villain. I figured out what “should” have happened to her.

I was looking forward to creating a new toon once a week. My life seemed to be looking up.

Until three days ago, Episode FIVE; when I got a notice of termination in my e-mail. Warner Brothers bought out DramaFever and since I don't have a record of publishing (more than twice) over the past 6 months, I'm being let go.

See? Doesn't my life sound like a Korean Soap Opera?

(And I will now join the many beanie members who despise DramaFever. It was fun while it lasted, but who fires a cancer patient 2 weeks after she comes back to work?)

Thanks. There are irreplaceable things I lost because of this cancer (and double mastectomy) but at least I still have my sense of humor.
I thought about trying to start a blog of my toons, but I don't think it would get much exposure.
(If I could, my first toon be a revenge drama on Warner Bros.)
And I'm not the only one who lost a job in this buy out. The person who was in charge of publishing all the news items for the dramafever site was also let go. I only know this because I wrote her a thank-you. But when I sent it to her dramafever email account, it had been terminated. So I searched (stalked) her and found her on linkd-in. I read there that she'd been let go last month.
She was such a sweet person. And I always appreciated her help. (Stupid stupid warnerbros/dramafever.)
Thanks for the kind words. I'm doing okay. Hope everyone else is too.

The consequences that occur when a buyout/takeover of a company happens are truly unfortunate. I understand the business side of it, but also the impact on employees. I've been through it and seen both sides of it. It is a difficult situation.

As far as your toons go, I say if there's a way for you to get them out there, go for it. I know that how to go about it exactly, is the question. ....... I'm not well-versed (or at all) on all things blog, so I'm certainly not one to give pointers on that front. All I can do is wish you the best of luck with that, no matter how you choose to do.

I'm so sorry to hear that you're going through so much all at once. That sucks! (And it makes me glad that I cancelled my DF subscription a long time ago and never renewed, even though I was tempted to.)

The good news is that it doesn't sound like you're in an old-school makjang in which the heroine is just a victim of her tragic circumstances, and the drama is all about the tears. You remind me much more of one of those empowered heroines I absolutely love-- sure, she stumbles and cries and wants to give up at times, but ultimately, she faces her challenges bravely, with her sense of humor intact, and continues to give her gifts despite her challenges. May your drama be an uplifting and heartwarming one in the end!

Sometimes I get overwhelmed with my own challenges, and I have to remind myself that I'm on a Heroine's Journey, and that crises often serve as the catalyst to much-needed growth. It ain't always easy, though.

Hugs, and hwaiting!!

Hi all! Happy weekend! I had a pretty exciting day yesterday--I went to a language fair and placed Superior for level 4+ Chinese conversation competition. That was fun. :) Then I went to the french fair to watch some friends perform, and hahaha I felt so lost! They have have "language police" who catch you if you if you speak English and make you answer a question in French, so I just kept repeating the only French I really know: Je ne parle pas Francais. Hahaha but it was still really fun!

I finally had a bit more time on my hands, yay! I'd been dying not being able to watch much kdrama.

Marriage Contract: I'm not supposed to tear up and start crying on episode two. It's just... not supposed to happen. Gah! I love them so much, so so much! Please don't die, Hye-soo! Also, this show gives me so much to think about in terms of Pride, and how useful (or useless) it is. My favorite character for the first three episodes was actually Ji-Hoon's mom, because I feel like she's such a complex combination of pride and shameless honesty. I just love this show.

Click Your Heart: I loved it! I want more choose your own hero dramas! The first time I watched it, she ended up with the baseball guy... but then I still really wanted to see the kickbutt guy from the trailer (he doesn't enter the arc if you choose baseball man)--and I loved him more!

Pinocchio: Ha, I rewatched a lot of it with my friend, because Lee Jong Suk. Who knew shaving was so hot?

Happy Friday, and a quick question: What do you think makes Kdramas so addicting? Me and my friend were wondering all this week, because it's turned both of our lives upside down--style choices, music choices, academic choices...

That kai bai boh settles everything from who gets the last bite of kimchi to giving away kingdoms.

Subtle romance in things like back hugs, tying shoelaces, wringing cloths and placing them on foreheads, and wiping coffee foam from the lips.

Gender bender plot lines.

Second lead syndrome

Flower boys, martial arts, and national treasures.

For starters. \/

Hah @ kai bai boh, so true.
I think beans and gf have talked about this before but I agree with them that it all boils down to format. Kdramas give us a beginning, a middle, and an end - always. Usually failing at one of those points, sometimes all three, and every once in rare while doing each perfectly. Either way tho, it's never like American dramas where they drag on and on, losing everything that made it good (Grey's Anatomy) or are cut off too soon without any closure (Selfie). Good or bad, kdramas are formatted to perfectly encapsulate that age-old narrative arc.

Orrrrrr maybe it's just all the pretty. Lol.

Why?

Because Kim SooHyun Came from The Stars and Song JoongKi is a Descendant of the Sun and the Sun is a Star.

And Yoo Ah In is blowing his top with the fury of Six Flying Dragons because Song JoongKi made a SungKyunKwan Scandal.

But Park YooChun says Three Days is all he needs to solve the problem, as long as there isn't a Girl Who Sees Smells.

Ah! But there is! When she, Shin SeKyung realises that When a Man Falls in Love, aka, Yeon WooJin, and is all for Marriage, Not Dating, one has to acknowledge his mother, Kim HaeSook, too. But when she says "I Can Hear Your Voice", I guess one shouldn't roll his/her eyes when Lawyer Lee BoYoung snarks that it is God's Gift that she can.

Oh Look! As God's Gift, she was Kim SooHyun in that drama! Oh, not the same Kim SooHyun from the stars then?

Happy Friday! Interesting to watch ratings war in Mon-Tues dramas. I think storyline is what decides the ratings since all has Top-notch acting from shows' leads. Also it is interesting to know that these 3 dramas which started on the same day and time have other connections. PD Lee Jung-sup of Lawyer Jo Deul-ho's debut mini-series was 'Hong Gildong' which had leads Gang Ji-hwan and Sung Yoo-ri of Monster and Jang Geun-suk of Jackpot. JGS- he certainly has come a long way!

ok two more dramas ended -DoTS and CBA. I enjoyed both and sad that Come back Ajussi got such a low ratings.
In CBA, my another favorite character besides Oh Yeon-seo was Ra Mi-ran(who played Maya- Reveal was pleasant surprise).
(From the interview with RMR done after Reply 88) [Elle]
Q: Are you very honest when you talk to other people?
A: I don't think so. I am the type who is afraid to reveal and all open about myself. I don't talk deep subjects even to my close friends. Then again I don't worry alone either. I just don't make any stress.
Q: How is that possible since life has sadness as well as happiness.
A: I just tell myself "Let's think this is hard time. Since I am actress, I might be able to use this in the future" and get over it coolly or I persuade myself and cheer on myself. After Reply 88, they say I am the trend/popular, but I tell myself "you never know when this bubble will disappear, so just calm down." I just don't let people cursing or people complementing bother me. Otherwise I will have a hard time, being too sensitive. Wouldn't it be nice that way, just enjoying a little and pay a little attention? I just read comments. To see what curses I am getting.

Q: I heard about your acting power while watching Ryu Jun-ryel episode in V apps. For example, in the passport scene you were totally different before and after the shooting. Actress Ra Mi-ran has battery attached to emoting?
A: No, How can I-I am not machine. I just go memorizing the script. Once it passes 3 lines, it gets difficult so I always keep the script close by my side. Shooting atmosphere is different every time. Since you can't predict other actors' acting, I go with 'Prepared/ready mind' rather than having some plan. After all, acting is a work you have to communicate with your partner.

Q: UNamRyu/Jungwhan vs UNamTaek/Park Bo-gum?
A: UNamKin! Anyway my husband is Kim Sung-gyun.
Q: Jung-bong vs Jung-pal?
A: Both of them are my sons, I can't pick just one.
Q: They say Actress Ra Mi-ran does not want to be shown as 'serious'.
A: I am doing it(acting?) very seriously. But people look at it as funny. I wonder if I am serious on wrong time? This is not the time to get serious? But I am always serious.
Q: For Ajumma who is talkative, weird, suspicious or comical. When Ra Mi-ran plays her, this ajumma become 'person with affection'. What could be the difference?
A: That is results of my desperate effort to survive and not getting hatred. The actors I know all have affection for the roles they play even if they are evil characters. Whether they make some ridiculous logic, excuse or not, they make their own reason to love their characters. Among many ajummas, there are some shameless ajummas. But even with them, there must be some history and reasons that they have turned out to be that way. As you see, people change according to the circumstances. Even though many people say they like me, some could be 'ticked off' by me. Just like that, a person may be considered as evil, but he could be very precious to someone. You can't help but having affection for those people."
Q: You are making stories on your role.
A: I usually keep on eye on surroundings. If you go to hospital, you see not every patients' guardians are crying. Even if their son has heart disease, people shows different ways to express their happiness and sadness. Sometimes when passing by some landscape, some scene comes to my mind, which I use often while I act. My remark "Sorry, Son" in the passport scene in Reply 88 was copied from what Kim Sun-young (Sun-woo's mom) said.
Q: You are known as "Expert in daily life acting"
A: That one, I think I got it because I didn't do anything. Usually actors have breathing going up when they do 'Shoot', but I drop that breathing. Since you don't need it in the daily life, I take that out as much as possible.

Q: Which project was a turning point in your acting career?
A: First project "Kind Geum-ja ssi". The start was very good and it was not the role you could do it easily. And I met 'Dancing Queen" luckily, and the movie 'Wish" gave me an award and I could go one step up. On TV, there were "Rude Young-ae ssi' and Reply 88. I think I remember them for a long time, when we laughed and cried together. Recently I enjoyed the movie "Himalaya". There was a scene a report asks "Why do you climb the mountain?" and answer line was "Because rice tastes good". If I am asked "Why do you act?", I think I will say "Meal truck. Their rice tastes good.. I do because it is my work. My work. It is fun." Work is something which can be headache if it does not work out well. But it will make you happy if you can do it continuously. The reason I do many projects is because if I work for a year continuously, I will have fun for all year long.

Q:How is it like living fun, working in your 40's?
A: I forgot about my age after I became 35 years old. But one day I realized I passed 2 years plus 40. However rather than thinking I am old, I feel like I am an immature child. Feeling nervous is same as before. Well, How should I live figuring out what to think, how to talk, how to behave -I am not sure. But no matter what the circumstances are, the fact I am the first priority does not change. Any hats (promotion, complements, etc) for me is not important at all. With what thought Human Ra Mi-ran will live is the most important. After that, you can be mother, wife, daughter, friend and co-worker.
These days there are more books about "Don't try too hard" "Don't make an effort". These are books for the people who try really hard because they lack self-confidence. I hope people don't try excessively. When I watch other mothers in my age group, they live in guilt about their children thinking they are lacking even though they are doing their best. I tell them "Don't ever feel sorry. That is their life. You should live for you hardest. Your children will watch you doing that and learn." Yes I am good mother. I let them know they need to be responsible and let them do whatever they want to do. I don't worry too much. "Sorry because your mom can take care of you well because she is working?" No - I don't have such guilt.

Q: Is it good to live as woman you think?
A: I think woman's life is much more interesting, and never have thought I wanted to be born as man in my next life.
If there is anything changed after Reply 88, Before the show, I played poor, a character with financial difficulty, but maybe because I played the character who became rich overnight, I think I got raise in my status. My grade went up.(laugh)
Q: You will be picky choosing your characters, right?
A: Of course. I don't do the character not fitting for me. Like the one I have to be PRETTY in.

Have you noticed -Lee seo-jin seems to have lost quite a weight in 'Marriage Contract'? It makes angst scene more realistic (yes I cried in the last ep) but I feel sorry for him. He said his energy gets all drawn out for his angst roles.
Ratings of the show went over 20% and it is well received with response like "once you start watching, you can't stop". PD Kim Jin-min said the reason drama gets this much love is thanks to good scripts and actors/actresses in an interview [OSEN/koreadaily]. More follows.

This drama is about the romance between a chaebul selfish man Han Ji-hoon/Lee Seo-jin and single mom with brain tumor Kang Hae-soo/UEE. Before the show, there were worries. Some thought 17
years apart between Lee and UEE might be too much doing romance, and there were doubts that UEE's acting talent is not up to be a lead for legist Melodrama.
Kim says, "I don't think PD can make up actors' acting. PD does the casting thinking "maybe this actor will be good match for this drama, maybe he has some other charm." I think that worked well in this project. I gave Lee Seo-jin ssi an offer and he accepted it without hesitation so I was very happy. I talked about the female lead with LSJ ssi a lot, and he said young actress might be good fit for the role. I thought being mother, younger person will fit better for the character. I thought if UEE ssi plays Hae-soo character, she will do good and my hunch was right."

Kim PD thinks that a character can shine only when actor/actress and PD make an effort together. "I don't think it is right to demand just actors to dive into the project. Production team
should approach and actors should too. With this drama, Actors, writer and staffs all put lots of effort. Writer-nim heard LSJ's opinion and had it reflected on the story."
Actors/actresses all worked hard, he says. In episode 7, Hae-soo had her emotion burst out about her situation and wailed in the bus garage. She had honest realistic cry and Kim PD extended time showing that scene, which made the viewers teared up. "I said one word to UEE ssi about this scene. If Hae-soo has one moment she has to sob good in this drama, it will be this scene. The only place she could cry without care because of the illness which changes her life she found out was bus garage. Of course I told her she did not have to do if she couldn't do it. But she did so well. I only filmed that scene once. With crying scene, if you keep shooting, it can be shown as fake, you see."

It was same with LSJ. In ep 12, he cried after he found out about Hea-soo's illness. He cried alone in front of office water purifier. The scene also played for extended time. "Usually they don't show such scene for long in dramas, but I wanted to make that unique in our drama. We did the edit that way thinking it would be nice if actors' serious efforts can reach to the
viewers. So I wanted to show it longer even if I had to skip other scenes. It was...

It was necessary for Ji-hoon and Hae-soo to have good cry once. "

The viewers are making loud voice, hoping that Hae-soo survives and has happy romance with Ji-hoon and is able to watch her daughter's happiness. Kim says, "Since she has her daughter, she
will try not to cry any more. She is mother who can't tell her daughter that she is sick so be sad for her. I think Jung Yoo-kyung writer-nim wants to say this. What is the most important value in your life? In life, money is important but love and people (relationship?) are also important. The reason writer-nim's script is good is that it reflects the way people live. It is a script which contains the life. The dramas thesedays do not seem to deal with how people live. Drama became a fancy show. But this writer-nim portrays people and life without
excessively."

Marriage Contract is very cliche with the story with obvious conclusion, yet it is heart-warming and interesting. He says,"Drama has predictable story anyway. It shows differently depending on how production team interprets, how creative it shows and how the audiences can empathize with the acting. There is no drama without cliche, because all drama deals with the story of people living and loving after all."

This drama airs at 10 in weekend when usually Makjang drama plays. Writer JYK was worried when the drama got this time slot. Kim PD says, "Makjang drama means over-the-top dramatic drama in other words. When it is dramatic, if the viewers can't understand the story, it gets the tag of Makjang drama. Our drama also has provoking elements. Man is rich and woman has brain tumor. But even if you have dramatic elements, if you can make the viewers understand it, it is not Makjang drama. I think the reason drama keeps having the story which has been done to death is because it can contain fresh expression and fresh emotions of that time period. You get criticized if you fail to make the viewers understand or you go against public sentiment in that time period." About MC, he says "These characters have sincerity/genuine hearts. Ji-hoon has love toward his mother and Hea-soo has love toward her daughter. I think people take it favorably even with over-the-top plots because this is common feeling anyone can understand. The viewers accepted thankfully, maybe because shows don't do this kind of story much thesedays. Also having actors/actresses the viewers feel comfortable with their acting made easier for viewers to understand."

Currently drama is doing well and Ads were all sold out. "I had some expectation because of interesting scripts, but I had no idea that the viewers' d give this kind of good responses. Actually our drama has predictable story line to a certain degree, so I thought actor/actress has do the good job. Thankfully Lee Seo-jin ssi was casted first, which made this drama possible. Also I told them to recruit UEE ssi no matter what once we decided. I believed they'd do perfectly."

He also praised child actress Sin Rin-ah who plays daughter Cha Eun-sung. "Ryn-ah feels like an angel fell from the sky for this drama. She read the script and did the acting all herself. I have never told her how to do it. I also told her mother that after this project, I hope she can play with other friends in school- Since a child should grow up like a child and do the acting. An actor can act with his/her life(experience?) as the base. I think living to do acting is not right."

PD Kim did 'Time between dog and wolf' 'Soldier', 'pride and prejudice', etc. He had good reputation for quality of the projects, but never the PD who gets good ratings. "I feel lost getting such high ratings. Personally this is the first time I got ratings over 20%. It is first 20% among all my projects. It is my family's honor. I am thankful to the writer, actors/actresses and the viewers. I feel that I finally see the sunlight." He adds, "Even if drama gets good reviews, if you get low ratings, production team has hard time in a way. I think
we showed the drama with this warm feeling and fitting to our sentiment also works. I feel good because I feel I confirmed that we still need this kind of drama for the viewers. I think we need dramas we can share our feelings getting while living, not just all fun dramas."

This PD has got his head on straight and a direct link to his heart. It's fantastic that he's met a script that appeals to both his direction style and the audience.

I adore Contract Marriage even though it's so angsty, mainly because for all it's ridiculousness, it feels so real, as if it wasn't a carefully-crafted story but simply as if I was just put, invisible, among people who were living all these while.

I can't believe the PD hasn't been giving instructions to Shin Rin-ah (adorable little Eun-sung). She's so frickin' talented! I'm glad to hear that PD-nim is reminding her mom about what's really in Rin-ah's best interests.

Thanks a million, fan!

0

Ah, I was wondering about the crying scene at the bus terminal. I kept thinking while watching it that the scene was too long, but I somehow could not press the fast-forward button. I remember thinking the PD had to have some balls of steel to keep that whole scene in. I'm glad he did.

The little girl who plays Eunsung is amazing. I like kid actors, but she might be the first one I really believe when she's emoting.

Hello everyone! Drama update time!

Sassy Go Go: I finished it on Sunday and I miss it so much. It was such a good show and it exceeded all of my expectations. I also now have a Ji Soo problem.

Sandglass: I started this on Monday and already I'm hooked. I haven't had much time since to watch more than the first two episodes because of work, but I should have it finished within the next month. I also have a string feeling that I might have to watch a really sappy drama after I finish it.

Descendants of the Sun: It's over. I'm in denial. At least we have those three bonus episodes though!

Jackpot: I'm behind, but I should be caught up in the next couple of weeks. I just really wanted to finish Sassy Go Go.

Reply 1988 and Jejoongwon: still taking my time on these two. I'll probably have to rotate between the two of them with episodes of Sandglass.

Next on the to watch list:
Entertainer (I'm so excited about this one and we only have a few more days until it begins)
Six Flying Dragons (I will start this when I catch up with Jackpot)
Marriage Contract (you all convinced me to watch it)
Jumong
Pinocchio

Viki is getting so many shows now. And exclusives too. I know it's hard to find enough subbers. Ms. Temper takes a long time to get English subs because they just don't have enough people. I'm not sure how they will find enough people to sub older dramas. I think they are still working on English subs for Yoona's Street.

That being said, I too would love to watch OMG with the comments on. Hilarious.

And I don't mean the many...many...many ads that now appear before the comments section (but do let me know if other mobile phone users don't get those), but I'm talking about the little quarter inch ads that appear mostly across the bottom of the screen but sometimes smack dap in the middle. And when they're in the middle, everything's frozen for a while.

If everyone else is getting that, I'll assume that's just the way the site is set up now. If not, then I'll need to call my wireless provider and talk about ad blockers or something.

I finally caught up on most of the dramas I meant to watch (I haven't touched Memory or Pied Piper) as well as finished off season 2 of Daredevil.

I'm glad Come Back Ahjusshi is done now, I think the actors (especially Honey Lee) put in great effort but the story was just not that strong and of course they were clobbered by DOTS. Likewise I'm happy DOTS ended with a great high quality show.

What I find I'm really looking forward to are Five Kids, Ms. Temper, and Neighborhood Lawyer. Those are my current 3 faves in order. (I'm also enjoying the Taiwanese drama Back to 1989 but it feels like it might have hit a filler patch.)

Cannot believe DOTS is over!!! No matter what people said I ADORED this drama. I loved that there was no love triangle, no forceful kisses, no pretending to hate a woman you secretly like, no weak female characters.
I loved that the characters said what they meant when they were thinking it, there were no unnecessary misunderstandings. Seriously, this is all I want from a k romantic drama. I don't want brain injuries or someone dying of cancer or horrible mother in laws or forceful kisses. I loved that SJ met dr kang liked her and pursued her right away like freaking adults. I will really miss this drama. Yes, I wish the plot was better but I loved it all the same.
Can anyone please suggest any Japanese romantic dramas or Korean romantic dramas that's kinda like DOTS? Please? Gonna binge this weeknd if I see one.

I never saw CMA but everyone says it was really good but I could never really get into it. I'm stil glad for rain's comeback! Glad it went well. Fighting!!

What else are y'all watching? And please don't forget to recommend a drama like DOTS to me. Something light and fun and no love triangles.

P.s- I cannot read the first comments on my phone because the ads are on them.

Hi Ann,

Just wanted to let you know that I agree with all that you said in your first two paragraphs about DotS. Despite its obvious flaws, I love it as well, and was surprised that there were no forced kisses. I hate those as well, and we had one in Heirs, and one in SeGa. So, very happy that there were none in this drama. I can't recommend any drama, however I wanted to let you know that I really liked what you said about DotS. Have a wonderful weekend!

Hey guys I started watching My name is Kim Sam Soon this week and it's amazing. I wonder why are there no such dramas any more. Yunno the mix of reality plus fantasy balanced well. I still haven't finished the drama but ths is the first time I'm unliking the male lead character (not Hyun Bin but Jin hyun) but there's the point , he has been shown real and his confusion and being something everybody can relate too. We all know Km Sam Soon is best but I love Hee Jin too and Henry, everybody needs a henry.
Does anyone know if somebody the writer has written something else like this one or do such works exist where they balance fantasy and reality so well?

MNIKSS is awesome sauce..another one I love to bits (and i think javabeans has a soft spot for this one too) is Soulmate. It's completely different and underrated in my opinion, but balances everything so well with multiple story lines

Thanks for the recommendation Kay. oulmate was on my to be watched list. I wonder what has happened to dramas lately, the dramas in the 2000's had so much feel. They dragged the viewer inside their world. A drama that has managed to generate the same feel I guess has been Marriage Contract. Nothing else comes to my mind. They are not even remotely likr those in 2000's.

I agree! Some of the best drama's are from early-mid 2000's...if you want some older recommendations, I can certainly give you some! I was just reminded of another drama with similar vibes like MNIKSS....it's called Dal Ja's Spring...again, underrated but worth checking out!

Over the last couple of weeks, I've been haunted by an episode of Pied Piper. I really can't get it out of my head and thought I should say the words out loud--or write them--somewhere. It felt like I'd witnessed something really horrible and my silence was acquiescence It finally dawned on me that there's nowhere better than here on Dramabeans.

In Episode 6 of Pied Piper, a female character stands trial for trying to kill her ex-boyfriend (and then herself). He was convicted of raping her, let out on probation, and returned to pick up where he left off. The prosecutor puts him on the stand and allows him to say she lied about being raped because she was jealous. The prosecutor, representing the people of Korea, goes on to say the convicted rapist was let out on probation because the victim didn't put up enough of a fight while being raped.

And here's the imagery that has stuck in my head. The prosecutor then uses an empty Coke bottle to illustrate what he means. He hands a pencil to the convicted rapist and asks him to try to put that pencil in the Coke bottle while the prosecutor moves the bottle around. After the rapist fails to do so, the prosecutor holds the bottle steady and asks him to try again.

I've been struck by the unwavering emphasis on the importance of wearing seat belts in Korean dramas. The characters always make a point of reminding each other to put their belt on. No, I'm not even talking about an excuse for skinship but as a point of safety. I've been impressed by the taboo that is drunk driving in dramas. Across the board, when characters drink they have a substitute driver take them home. Or a cab. Unless they're evil. I don't recall an actor portraying a contemporary character lighting up a cigarette. I've seen them holding the cigarette or smell it, but they don't light it. As mandated by the Korean Communications Standard Commission, knives used as weapons as blurred to not "convey excessive shock, anxiety or disgust to viewers" the Talking Cupboard explains. So, the writers, the producers, the broadcasters know, they KNOW, that words matter, actions matter, in dramas. They don't dream of letting someone drive drunk (again, unless they're the bad guy) or not wear a seat belt on their shows . BUT. Here, now, today in the year 2016, the state's representative, the voice of the people, can be depicted as standing in a court room and arguing that a convicted rapist ought got a bum deal because the woman didn't fight hard enough which means it wasn't rape. He can use a Coke bottle to illustrate how hard it is to shove a pencil in it when that Coke bottle is moving. If only the woman moved around like that Coke bottle! No, the negotiator's going on to testify that she was unable to act because of fear fixes nothing for me because by standing there and uttering those words, the prosecutor is uttering the state's beliefs and so sanctions the attitude behind those words

Yes. Discussing rape...

Argh that sounds disgusting. I was considering to watch Pied Piper but I guess not. Ever since I watched Signal and read up about the Miryang Gang Rape case, I've been horrified by how easily men are let off for sexual violence and how serious the culture of victim-blaming is in Korea. I just couldn't believe that a gang rape case involving more than 40 high school boys against 3 middle and high school girls could happen (with no serous consequences against the perpetrators) in such a developed first world country like Korea.

You should watch Pied Piper though, if only for that scene because that's not the end of it.

I'm not gonna spoil it for you, but Joo SeongChan, the drama's protagonist, takes that bottle and absolutely makes a statement with it and shatters that idiot prosecutor's steaming, fresh pile of bullshit.

I'm gonna state outright that Pied Piper is no Signal (I mean, even Signal's not perfect either) but I do believe that it has enough to go toe to toe with it, despite being completely different.

I am watching Pied Piper as well and got disgusted by the prosecutor and boyfriend on that trial scene. In many ways, this is one of the things that made me questioned the Korean Society's stand on rape.

I've watched Hope/Wish (the 2013 film that stars Sol Kyung Gu and Lee Re) this weekend, and cried buckets. It was heartbreaking to say the least, even typing this now and remembering what happened, my eyes are starting to water. Nonetheless, the criminal was only sentenced a 12 year imprisonment, the reason? the court ruled that the guy is drunk when he raped So Won.

Tch, my sentiments are voiced out by Dong Hoon, so yeah.

Yes. Discussing rape is a tough issue. Every society grapples with this and nobody's perfect in dealing with it starting with us here in the U.S. No, I don't expect a television show to eradicate disease or erase social ills. But this? From folks who are clearly not oblivious to the fact that what they show on screen echos in society? From the same mind that was sharp enough to write a show like Liar's Game?
So, I'm haunted, I'm beyond disgusted, I'm angry. Shame on Ryoo Yong-Jae for writing what is, for me anyway, utterly repugnant and inexcusable.

Shame on every person who shepherded that piece of garbage script onto TV (and computer) screens in Korea and abroad. I'd shin kick you from here to eternity if I could.

I didn't watch Pied Piper, but to comment on your description of that scene: Sometimes the writers use the dramas to depict an exaggeration of something that goes on in Korean society so that people will realize ho absolutely ridiculous the thinking is. I'm not saying that is the case here, so your disturbance may be warranted. However, over the years I have been SHOCKED with what has been portrayed in dramas. Money is above the law, woman are objects, the media can be manipulated, that sort of stuff.

Like I replied to Kaylie, that was not the end of that scene. I would have torn the writer a new one if he had intended to leave it as is or even endorse it, but since it was totally scorched within the episode itself (more like 5 minutes), I was fine with it.

Sure, life imitates art, but art imitates life too. Victim-blaming is not at all new to the world and the notion that 'the woman just didn't put up much if a fight' being a reason why rapists are not in the wrong? - age old excuse.

Echos in society? More like echoed from society.

That logic was disgusting, yes, but I'm all for putting it on TV if it could show with impact what kind of bullshit that is, so that dumbasses can pull their heads out of their asses and see the light.

Also, this might me just me, but Korean Liar Game wasn't that sharp.

Hi Beanies,
I've been trolling for a while now. Just too busy to post. My daughter needs more treatment for her melanoma, so still lots of doctor's appointments. Hubby and I have decided to trade off helping her, even though she prefers me. It's just too much for me. I wish I could tell you it was a simple cut-it-out-and it's-over situation, but it's not. Still, otherwise she is in good health, as am I and hubby.

Watching:
DOTS--So glad it's over. Well, almost over. If I weren't working on it, I don't think I would have finished it. It helped me to think of it as a "slice of life" story about the lives of commandos and rescue workers and how hard it is for them to have relationships. LOVED: The couples. Can Song-Song be real? They are Adorable. The setting. Beautiful cinematography. The English. I loved hearing all the accents and how people from different places were able to communicate with each other through that common language. (Of course, in reality, I have found that sometimes you have languages other than English in common and that comes in handy too). HATED: Being emotionally manipulated. Toward the end, I was like, "Really, he's not dead?" I didn't even cry during Episode 15 because I knew there was some kind of trick/twist coming. I mean, we had a whole episode to go. I also hated the inconsistencies of the "plot". She just shocked his heart and brought him back to life. He jumps out of bed and goes to help with the NK soldier who is holding a hostage while bleeding out. Are those things physically possible?

Okay, so it was a LOVE/HATE relationship. I don't "get" the ratings. I'd give it 3 stars, which means I finished it, but I wouldn't watch it again.

PS--I did watch the last two Episodes without subs and was surprised how much Korean I can now understand. What fun.

Five Children--This one is so cute. I love all the couples. I look forward to the weekend because I can watch it. And yea, 50 Episodes! Unlike what someone said earlier, I look forward to when the in-laws move forward in their relationship. That's what a family drama is all about. ALL the people in the family. I do wonder about how the kids will handle him having a new woman. My favorite couple is the Golfer couple. I hope they end up together.

Ms. Temper--Another sleeper. Really good. Episode 8 was really intense and so well acted. I loved how the writers were able to capture the dilemma that each character faced in reporting the sexual harassment. And that VP guy is simply gross. He's a sex addict and he won't be able to stop because he doesn't think he is doing anything wrong.

As for the "OTP", if they never get together romantically, that's all right with me. There are other ways to make a family.

And excuse me, can we give a few hurrahs for Yoon Sang-Hyun acting abilities? He has transformed himself. I hardly recognize him. Bravo!

And that's it. That's all I can work into my schedule right...

After watching reply 1988 i decided to watch reply 1997,i have to say they are both extremely good but i think Reply 1988 is a little superior to Reply 1997 in terms of characters and also story.I watched the shows mostly for family stories and since reply 1988 had 4 families i liked it more,in terms of romance i think both shows are lacking but reply 1988 is more lacking in its delivery.......but overall i really enjoyed both shows and i cannot wait to watch reply 1994.

I liked 1997 the most because it's the shortest. Hur.

1994 was the worst for me since they completely derailed the latter half from heartwarming coming-of-age family drama to who's-her-husband? (But of course, you should watch and make your own judgement.)

1988 has the best balance between husband searching, character focus and family antics but I sometimes got so frustrated and irked by the drawn out episodes. 1 hr means 1 hr, PD! 1 hr does not mean 1 hr 48 mins!

1997 is the shortest and so it only the leads (and their immediate family, a bit) got much focus and exploration. 1988 did better at that but! The length! I am so pissed at the director for that. I don't think anyone understands my agony.

Required fields are marked *

I liked 1994, but I think the writer totally overdid the who-the-husband-hunt thing in the latter half. Even though my ship sailed at the end, I ended up not caring anymore for the couple.

Now 1988 I liked too, but like Peeps said, the episode is too freaking long! Sometimes I could feel the story meandered a bit and I started losing focus, and so when certain things were revealed, it didn't pack as much emotional punch as it would have been if it was revealed earlier.

1997 is still my favorite up to this point. It was short, sweet, and straight to the point.

Hi Beanies!
Wowza, it's been a while since I've been here. I finished marathoning SFD last week, but I still haven't been able to move on. It was so freaking good!
But as dark as it was, I was kinda hoping that the writer didn't have to make Poeun and Sambong so unlikable in order for us to sympathize with Lee Bang Woo. I think it would be interesting to make Lee Bang Woo's character as ruthless as they can, but then again maybe that would change the whole dynamics of his relationship with Boon-yi, Moo-hyul, and Lee Bang Ji - which I don't really want [yeah, I'm so fickle-minded :D].
One thing though, I will forever love Moo-hyul! He's such a big, lovable oaf. I love the way his character's matured towards the final leg of the series also. Still, that dragon credits for him was way too long overdue!

I'm rewatching it right now and I find it interesting how my judgement is so different now as compared to when I was watching it as it aired. When it was airing, I was Team Bangwon all the way, everyday. I hated how Sambong turned out (Though I still liked Po Eun to the end, a little bit frustrated but I still liked him) and I kept on telling myself that Bangwon has his reasons. But watching it now, I can understand it more and the characters are actually more complex than I first thought of them.

I should give this a rewatch too, but prolly not anytime soon. :D
I was Team Bangwon, but deep in that twisted unconscious compartment of my heart, I couldn't help thinking that hmmm... it would be interesting to see him go all dark and ruthless and kill Poeon and Sambong just because he wants more power, not because the other characters pushed him to do that - which seems to be done to at least justify his action here.

I noticed yesterday that unless I request the desktop version of the site, only the first page of comments appears on a recap, with no link to or indication of additional pages. Happy weekend everyone!

For now I am watching marriage contract.. can't wait for tomorrow's episode! I really like this drama a lot.. I think UEE acting is a lot better, but she can't move my heart with her tears.. I don't know if it's just me. However, i can't stop my flood of tears whenever Ji Hoon or Eun sang shed theirs..

DotS episode 15 was amazing, Ohh the feelings.. I just find that their disappearance could have been written in another way.. something was not right in that point for me. Despite some flaws, it was a great show with great actors.

I watched 3 episodes of monster, the first 2 were pretty good, but I don't know if I will continue watching it (as I read a lot of comments that don't encourage me to do so)

You guys make me wanna watch SFD, but the thing is that I don't like to watch shows with many episodes. Should I watch this one?

I just really miss " I remember you", I want a drama like that to watch.. Any suggestions?

So,finally started six flying dragons ... can't believe it is so good..and i was putting it off for no reason..

My first 50 episode series as well..

So, Q: Is Lee Bang Ji's sword special? - no blood on it..and then we see flashback his chinese master tells him that the sword will not have blood on it when he attacks at a certain speed... and he also tells LBJ that this sword will make you as fast as your opponent..to which LBJ wonders when he got so fast.

SO??..anything special there?

I am on ep 20 now..

also, GTM's brother, mother of bro-sis couple, 'shadow that helped the goreyo minister in ep 1 to thwart general's appointment to the ministry..all these have yet to unravelled right? Not completely forgotten and all right?

0
5
reply

Required fields are marked *

Generally nothing gets forgotten in SFD - if a mystery is set up in an early episode it comes back later. This is one show where the screenwriting is extremely tight, which is impressive given how complex and lengthy the show is. As far as LBJ's sword skills, the show suggests that he gains speed and ability every time he fights someone better then himself (hence the jump in speed after sparring with GTM).

0
4
reply

Required fields are marked *

Ah..nd lastly..

In ep 1, we are told GTM kills that best swordsman and then becomes the best in the nation..but we are not shown if he actually did that..

Also, the minister (PM since ep 1) is shocked to see GTM defeat that guy

Then we see that when chinese master comes looking for the killer, GTM's brother tells him that there was some legendry fighter and his son..and so on..the successors are there..and some cult still protects them and teaches them the best swordfight..

So, I thought GTM is a fake..but then the episode he dies in..its established that he is a good fighter..

1. Is there some group yet to come out into the picture?
2. is there another gifted swordsman? (not MY for sure..or maybe i don't know)
3. Don't tell me if it is an interesting mystery..
4. And whats with the teacher- he has the best of the students GTM, MY..but himself so pathetic..he ain't faking it rt?

Did any one watch the first episode of Love @ Seventeen?

There's barely a TW drama that I can get through the first ten minutes because of all the contrivances, fake characters and non-acting but... this is giving me In a Good Way vibes (which are good vibes). It's realistic. There's an AWESOME friendship between three girls. Mom & daughter are tight. And lonely boy is making my heart ache.

I'm not sure it's going to last because right now the drama is set during high school years and I do know that it's supposed to cover some 15 years of time... and it might well progress to love triangles, manipulation and contrivances, who knows! But just ep. 1 was surprisingly good.

Happy weekend, folks!

Didn't get to watch alot of dramas this week coz for me it was all about the DotS finale, lol! And with that said, I am happy with the way things ended. That last bit, lol. It was the show telling people to chill and just enjoy the ride and that it didn't take itself too seriously as well. It fulfilled my kdama requirement in that I was fully entertained from start to finish. Looking forward to next week's special episodes.

Marriage Contract - going along well. Tho I haven't seen the last 2 eps, the story is progressing in a good way.

Lawyer Jo Deul Ho - my fave mon-tues show at the moment!! Gosh, my eyes just suddenly tear up with the awesome acting. I was moved both episodes! Almost didn't give this a chance.

Ms Temper - on hold at the moment. I find myself getting pissed off at the co-workers and couldn't really get into the show. Maybe I'll pick it up later.

I still find myself randomly rewatching Signal eps, haha. I miss this show! Will start Tree with deep roots soon as I am also missing SFD, especially after reading that some people are just starting to marathon it.

Hello Beanies! I'm late this week because I'm on a trip in NZ- The scenery here is amazing!
But unfortunately reception and wifi is spotty.

First, thanks to @mary- loved City Hunter! Not sure if you will see this but yeah, had to say thanks! Finished it on the plane while my boy slept. Which meant I was darn tired. But it was worth it! And I know now what you mean by Paaain... *spoiler!* when Procecutor died... Oof my heart! ? didn't expect the twist of his biological father also so I was very entertained throughout. Thanks Mary again! ?

Also it helped soften the disappointment of DOTS. watched the last 2 episodes and there were some moments I LOLed like *spoiler* the part where they thought it was SJK's "ghost" eating his offering food, that was funny and entertaining. But overall disappointed in the lack of plot and ending. I honestly feel that the writer saw how charming SJK was filming the first 2 episodes and then decided not to care about writing a coherent plot anymore after like epi 8 or something and focus on writing scenes for the OTP to interact- like him "dying" x3. Or was it 4? ? Which is a waste because it Could Have Been So Much Better.

Plan to watch Splish Splash Love and Page Turner if I have time and maybe start Liar Game? I heard its good- is it exciting with a good plot? Not sure but don't think anyone recommended it.
Also want to watch TW Refresh Man once j have reliable wifi because you know- Aaron Yan! ?

So, into the 30s of Six flying dragon:

1. I can see drama is trying to land a good image for our hero.. but ... I really can't shake my doubts about him -

He is a tyrant..impatient, will do what he wants..and immediately 'remove elements' that irks him or his beliefs in any way..the only good thing.. he is a tyrant with a cause..
Selfish and wants power..

Coming to the first king and sambong - i just think all of this is so stupid..
As per sambong's grand plan - king is supposed to be a puppet with family having no power..

SO why did they want regime change? as po eun said.. keep the same goreyo king..and make the changes you want to.. that would have been easily done...

What is the point in pulling some of the most acclaimed fighters of the land and push them into powerless irrelevant positions in the country?

And eventually that is what ahppened..another dynasty..

Every dynasty will have good leaders and really bad leaders, storng leaders and weak leaders..

Silla dynasty spanned 1K yrs, goreyo 500, josheon 500...
So should we say Silla was better? Or Capitalism may prove to be the best bet ever (I wonder..world is in dumps rt now)
